Caldwell Construction makes a significant investment ordering further Volvo excavators

Caldwell Construction Ltd of Stoke on Trent has taken delivery of 28 more Volvo crawler excavators since March of this year, as it continues to expand its groundworks and civil engineering business within the house building sector.

In all, a total of 22 fourteen tonne EC140E’s and 6 twenty two tonne EC220E’s – new to the Caldwell fleet – were selected, following a competitive tender process, but in particular thanks to the reliability and performance of the previous machines purchased back in 2013 and late 2015. “Basically we have trust in the Volvo brand in terms of performance and reliability,” comments Caldwell Construction’s Plant Manager, Shaun Sentence.   “The Volvo fourteen tonner is a well-built machine in our opinion and the existing machines in the fleet have lived up to our expectations. This time around, besides adding more  EC140’s we have decided to up the size of some of the excavators by opting for the EC220E which will give us added flexibility on some of our larger sites. Another deciding factor for choosing Volvo once again is down to the support we receive for parts and service from Volvo’s support centre at Warrington.”

Both EC140 and EC220 models are powered by Volvo Stage IV compliant 4 & 6 cylinder engines developing 121 and174hp respectively. The machines’ ‘Integrated work mode control’ provides high efficiency, rapid-dig cycles coupled to significantly low fuel consumption.  This advanced mode-control system ensures the maximum possible hydraulic horsepower available is delivered at a constant engine speed under varying load conditions. In addition, boom and arm geometry provide highly competitive digging forces and lifting capacities, which makes for faster work cycles. Hose rupture valves are fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders as are quick fit hydraulics and a hammer/shear service. The latest arrivals at Caldwell Construction Ltd have been supplied with optional hand rails mounted on the superstructure, vandal guards, hydraulic quick hitch, and a full set of buckets.

These additional 28 machines are all incremental to the Caldwell Construction fleet of equipment which includes Volvo compact excavators – in all totalling 42 Volvo branded machines. The recent additions have been fully deployed, working on a growing portfolio of prestigious multi-million pound housing-construction projects for major house building contractors in the Greater Manchester and Merseyside conurbations along with expansion into the north-western parts of the Midlands. The machines join a mixed fleet of over one hundred items of equipment which is specifically used on all of Caldwell Construction’s projects.

Caldwell Construction Ltd, with its headquarters located at Stoke on Trent, is a family run groundworks and civil engineering business that undertakes a variety of construction projects specialising in the new-build housing sector with enabling works including road construction and the laying of sewers, but also offering a complete civil engineering package for the construction industry.
